If you start your ride near Mich Ave or Fairlane, about a mile into it, where u leave UMD and head into the woods there is a temporary barrier. Then, before one mile, there is another barrier where the trail passes under Ford rd, and links with Hines Park. To continue, you have to defeat that barrier and get yelled at by workmen on the bridge above.
After that, the stretch of Hines Drive between Ford rd and Outer Drive about 1 mile is blissfully void of cars, because those entrance ramps are barricaded to autos. All of this is because of the construction on Ford Rd which is supposed to be completed in early autumn We parked on the south end rode all the way up and ate in Lake Orion lots of great restaurants.
Took the nice downhill smooth ride back. The whole way was wonderful. Our recommendation though is to not wear new shoes the crushed limestone causes your bike and all to be covered in dust. Since repaving and connection with the Michigan Airline Trail, this trail has gone from one of the worst to one of the best trails around. I love this trail so much. These trails are quiet, secluded, and a ton of fun. It easily beats other trails around me. All 4 parks have plenty of bathrooms, water fountains, map stations, and awesome bike racks for pumping up your tires or doing repairs with all the necessary tools included.
The paths are all smooth and very well maintained from branches, leaves, and other debris. For as popular and well maintained these parks are, the bike paths are never crowded which is awesome. Whoever thought out the trails, details, and accessories did an awesome job.
The bike repair stations are an amazing touch to these great trails. The others pale in comparison. I road the trail to the Hawkins Road trail head last week. It looks like there is great progress extending the trail further toward Jackson. That new section of the trail appears complete as far as the eye can see, but it is not yet open.
